چکیده

A set S of vertices of a graph is a defensive alliance if, for each element of S, the majority of its neighbors is in S. The problem of finding a defensive alliance of minimum size in a given graph is NP-hard and there are polynomial-time algorithms if certain parameters are bounded by a fixed constant. In particular, fixed-parameter tractability results have been obtained for some structural parameters such as the vertex cover number. However, for the parameter treewidth, the question of whether the problem is FPT has remained open. This is unfortunate because treewidth is perhaps the most prominent graph parameter and has proven successful for many problems. In this work, we give a negative answer by showing that the problem is W[1]-hard when parameterized by treewidth, which rules out FPT algorithms under common assumptions. This is surprising since the problem is known to be FPT when parameterized by solution size and “subset problems” that satisfy this property usually tend to be FPT for bounded treewidth as well. We prove W[1]-hardness by using techniques from a recent hardness result for the problem of finding so-called secure sets in a graph. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.2.2 Nonnumerical Algorithms and Problems

On global (strong) defensive alliances in some product graphs

A defensive alliance in a graph is a set $S$ of vertices with the property that every vertex in $S$ has at most one moreneighbor outside of $S$ than it has inside of $S$. A defensive alliance $S$ is called global if it forms a dominating set. The global defensive alliance number of a graph $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a global defensive alliance in $G$. In this article we study the global ...

Strong Alliances in Graphs

For any simple connected graph $G=(V,E)$, a defensive alliance is a subset $S$ of $V$ satisfying the condition that every vertex $vin S$ has at most one more neighbour in $V-S$ than it has in $S$. The minimum cardinality of any defensive alliance in $G$ is called the alliance number of $G$, denoted $a(G)$. In this paper, we introduce a new type of alliance number called $k$-strong alliance numb...

Defensive alliances in regular graphs and circulant graphs

In this paper we study defensive alliances in some regular graphs. We determine which subgraphs could a critical defensive alliance of a graph G induce, if G is 6-regular and the cardinality of the alliance is at most 8. In particular, we study the case of circulant graphs, i.e. Cayley graphs on a cyclic group. The critical defensive alliances of a circulant graph of degree at most 6 are comple...

Exact Defensive Alliances in Graphs

A nonempty set S ⊂ V is a defensive k-alliance in G = (V,E), k ∈ [−Δ,Δ] ∪ Z, if for every v ∈ S, dS(v) ≥ dS̄(v) + k. A defensive k-alliance S is called exact, if S is defensive k-alliance but is no defensive (k+1)-alliance in G. In this paper we study the mathematical properties of exact defensive k-alliances in graphs. In particular, we obtain several bounds for defensive k-alliance of a graph....

Restricted Space Algorithms for Isomorphism on Bounded Treewidth Graphs

The Graph Isomorphism problem restricted to graphs of bounded treewidth or bounded tree distance width are known to be solvable in polynomial time [2],[19]. We give restricted space algorithms for these problems proving the following results: • Isomorphism for bounded tree distance width graphs is in L and thus complete for the class. We also show that for this kind of graphs a canon can be com...
